The Playground EcoSystem
Each week, we assess the featured strategy across three dimensions — Impact, Play, and Sustainability. That way, you’ll know how these systems can help you and your team grow without burning out. Here’s the rating:
- Impact: Does this move people and matter?
- Play: How easy/fun is it to put in place?
- Sustainability: Will it last without burnout?
Together, this gives us The Recess Tally. Here’s how we tally it →
IMPACT – 9/10
Funnels assume the buyer journey is linear, but that’s not how we interact.
We move around ecosystems like kids at recess: we explore, wander, test boundaries, take breaks, and come back when something catches our attention again.
The Playground EcoSystem helps to rethink the journey, so that every piece of content, every offer, every small touchpoint adds another reason for your community to stay connected.
That way, they never “exit” the ecosystem; they just go play somewhere else until they’re ready to come back.
PLAY – 9/10
Instead of pushing people through a linear sequence, map your brand’s touchpoints to five playground habitats and notice the gaps.
Where are people playing now? What do they need to stay engaged? Do they only swing by (visibility) but never climb (engage)?
Then design experiences to fill in the gaps.
1. The Sandbox — Shared Foundations
This is where people first touch your brand. It represents your foundations (story, values, and purpose). Some people stay and build castles. Others just pass through, leaving a handprint behind.
→ Your role: keep the sand fresh and create things worth digging into again later.
2. The Swings — Momentum & Visibility
The swings remind us that movement happens through exchange: the back and forth of ideas. It represents your visibility channels (content, collaborations, and conversations).
→ Your role: build visibility through genuine exchange and consistency, sharing ideas that keep momentum alive.
3. The Jungle Gym — Connection & Discovery
This is where people climb, explore, and meet others on different levels. It represents your connection points (newsletter, discussion threads, community spaces, and events).
→ Your role: foster relationships and natural pathways for interaction.
4. The Slide — Access & Transformation
The slide is where people take the leap — it’s smooth, fast, and fun when trust is built. This represents your offers and programs, the experiences where your community can go deeper.
→ Your role: make the path clear and the landing soft. Create low-friction ways for people to act on curiosity.
5. The Picnic Table — Reflection & Regeneration
After play comes rest. People gather here to share what they’ve learned and plan what’s next. It represents your feedback loops and reflection spaces.
→ Your role: keep learning and evolving as a community.
SUSTAINABILITY – 9/10
Funnels burn people out because they never stop asking for more.
More leads, more urgency, more output to keep the machine moving.
But ecosystems are designed to self-regulate.
When you build content and offers that invite participation instead of forcing conversion, momentum becomes shared. Your community helps carry the energy.
That means fewer “launches,” less pressure to keep creating from scratch, and more time to observe, rest, and respond.
Your job shifts from chasing attention to maintaining spaces: refreshing what’s there, adding new “equipment” only when it genuinely adds value, and letting participants circulate naturally.
Over time, the ecosystem sustains itself because people return, reuse, and re-engage without needing you to push them through the gate.
