Brand equity is what differentiates the most valuable brands from everyone else. Think about the first three brands that come to your mind… They have great brand equity.

It’s the reason people are willing to line up at Tim Hortons for the world’s most average coffee.

It’s why people will drive across the border just to shop at Trader Joe’s.

These brands didn’t build equity by shouting louder or posting more. They built it through the small, intentional distinctions people come to expect every time they interact with them.

The Meaningful Distinctions Grid helps brands build those distinctions so you can earn the support of your community.

The Meaningful Distinctions Grid for Brand Equity

IMPACT – 8.5/10

What makes you decide you like a person?

Usually, it’s small patterns of behavior that accumulate over time, adding up to trust. The way they show up, follow through, or make us feel.

It’s the same way we decide we like a company. Brand equity grows through patterns. It builds through the small, repeated choices a brand makes — choices that create a feeling of recognition long before someone reads a headline or hears a tagline.

These patterns show up in how a brand communicates, how it behaves, how it treats its community, and what it consistently prioritizes.

The Meaningful Distinctions Grid helps teams identify these patterns early and build them intentionally.

A Note on Language
Many branding frameworks use competitive language. Win attention. Win loyalty. Win hearts. These phrases reinforce a dominant mindset centered on possession and persuasion. A more decolonised approach to branding positions community as partners rather than targets. In this lens, brand equity is not about winning. It is about earning support through clarity, consistency and care.

PLAY – 7/10

The Meaningful Distinctions Grid is a practical tool to ensure your brand stays recognizable across everything it communicates and everything it does. It uses a 3×3 layout…

  • Three columns: Always; Never; Differently.
  • Three rows: Communication; Behavior; Decision-making.
The Meaningful Distinctions Grid

Here’s how you use it:

1) Clarify: Start by listing the small things your brand does on repeat. Look at your writing, your interactions with the community, and the decisions you make. These should be behaviors you already demonstrate, not ideals or aspirations.

Examples might include explaining the reason behind decisions, choosing calm language, or avoiding inflated promises.

Once you have a list, sort each item into the row where it belongs:
Communication, Behavior, or Decision-making.

2) Distill:
Now place each behavior into one of the three columns:

  • ALWAYS
    • Patterns you commit to. These are non-negotiables that shape your brand’s personality and reliability.
    • i.e: We always use accessible language.”
  • NEVER
    • Boundaries that protect the brand from drift. These are not moral judgments. They are deliberate choices that keep the brand aligned.
    • i.e: We never exaggerate outcomes.
  • DIFFERENTLY
    • Your distinguishers. These are the choices that meaningfully set you apart from others in your space.
    • i.e: We build invitations instead of funnels.

This step turns your list into a structured grid. It shows how your brand behaves across different situations instead of one-off traits.

3) Proof:
For each box, find one recent example from your work that demonstrates the behavior. It might be a line you wrote, a process decision, or a moment where you supported your community.

Proof keeps the grid honest. It prevents it from becoming a performance and grounds each distinction in real action.

Once complete, the grid becomes a reference you can use daily.

  • When you write, check the Communication row.
  • When you engage, check the Behavior row.
  • When you plan, check Decision-making.

The grid helps your brand feel like your brand every time it shows up.

SUSTAINABILITY – 9/10

Brand equity grows through repetition. It strengthens each time your brand behaves in a way people can predict and trust. The 3×3 grid keeps that consistency visible without becoming a heavy process.

To keep it alive:

  • Revisit quarterly. Choose one box in the grid to update. Brands evolve quietly and gradually, not through reinvention.
  • Keep it visible. The grid should sit beside your working documents, not in a forgotten folder.
  • Proof before change. If something in the grid no longer feels true, find three proof points before replacing it. This keeps the grid honest and protects it from becoming aspirational.

As the grid becomes part of your recurring practice, your brand grows more consistent, more recognizable, and more trusted. These are the conditions that strengthen brand equity in a sustainable way.

Recess Tally – 8.3

The Meaningful Distinctions Grid earns a weighted Recess Tally of 8.3/10.

Takeaway

Establishing brand equity takes time and consistency, but it’s one of the most valuable assets a company has, so getting it right matters.
